The global news organization has begun a test period where site publishers can add a cross-platform video player to their sites and show breaking news stories.
Reuters and Brightcove have partnered on a video service for affiliates that will work on Windows and Macintosh platforms visiting an affiliate site.
The video player will display up to 20 breaking news stories from Reuters; the service plans to update the content through the day. Users can navigate to and from videos and control the volume from within the player. Everything loads within the player on the affiliate's page, so there are now downloads needed.
Currently, Reuters says on the site that the player is free during this pilot period, and may contain advertising. Elinor Mills of CNet News reported that after the pilot period, Reuters will offer affiliates the option of paying for an ad-free service, or showing ads instead.
Reuters is not limiting the sites that can host its video player. Individual bloggers or news organizations can become Reuters affiliates and embed the player in their content. Interested users may register for the service at the Reuters' site.
